Assigned to the French Army because the US Army refused to integrate them into American divisions, the Harlem Hellfighters fought with such ferocity and distinction that France awarded the entire regiment the Croix de Guerre. Individual soldiers, including Corporal Henry Johnson, received France's highest military honor for acts of extraordinary valor. They never lost a man to capture. They never surrendered a foot of ground. The German soldiers who faced them called them the Blutlustige Schwarze Männer — the Bloodthirsty Black Men — and feared them accordingly.

The 369th Infantry Regiment, known as the Harlem Hellfighters, was an all-Black National Guard regiment from New York that served in World War I. Assigned to the French Army due to US Army segregation policies, the regiment spent 191 days in continuous front-line combat — more than any other American unit in the war. The French government awarded the entire regiment the Croix de Guerre for their valor. Individual soldiers including Corporal Henry Johnson received France's highest military honors.
