Allied Intervention in Russian Civil War (1918–1920)
Among the least-known chapters of American military history, the Allied Intervention in the Russian Civil War sent U.S. soldiers into the frozen wilderness of North Russia and the vast expanse of Siberia — a mission shrouded in political complexity and largely forgotten by history.
The Polar Bear Expedition
The 339th Infantry Regiment — known as the "Polar Bears" — deployed to Archangel, Russia in 1918 as part of a multinational Allied force. Officially tasked with preventing war supplies from falling into German hands and supporting Czech forces, they found themselves fighting Bolshevik Red Army units in brutal winter conditions. The campaign lasted until 1919, with American soldiers fighting and dying in a war that was never officially declared.
The Siberian Expedition
Simultaneously, the American Expeditionary Force Siberia — centered on the 27th and 31st Infantry Regiments — deployed to Vladivostok. Operating alongside Japanese, British, and other Allied forces, they guarded the Trans-Siberian Railway and attempted to stabilize a chaotic situation as the Russian Civil War raged around them.
The Forgotten Soldiers
These men served in one of the most remote and politically ambiguous missions in American history — fighting in a foreign civil war, in extreme conditions, with unclear objectives. Their service deserves to be remembered.
