Collection: Taiwan Strait Crises

Taiwan Strait Crises (1954–1958)

In the tense early years of the Cold War, the waters between mainland China and Taiwan became one of the world's most dangerous flashpoints — and American service members stood directly in the breach.

The First Crisis (1954–1955)

Following the Chinese Communist bombardment of the Nationalist-held islands of Quemoy and Matsu, the United States deployed the 7th Fleet to the Taiwan Strait and secured the Formosa Resolution from Congress — authorizing the President to use military force to defend Taiwan. The crisis underscored America's commitment to containing communist expansion in the Pacific.

The Second Crisis (1958)

In August 1958, the People's Republic of China launched a massive artillery bombardment of Quemoy — firing nearly half a million shells over 44 days. The U.S. Navy escorted Nationalist supply convoys under fire, and American aircraft carriers patrolled the strait in a direct show of force. The crisis brought the world to the brink of a broader conflict before Beijing backed down.

The Sailors & Airmen

The men of the 7th Fleet and Pacific Air Forces served in harm's way, projecting American power in one of the most volatile regions on earth. Their presence and resolve prevented a wider war.
