• Front — Out of the Den and Into the Fire: The artwork depicts the 1st Texas climbing toward Houck’s Ridge under fire from the 124th New York Infantry and Smith’s 4th New York Battery.
• Back — The Guns of Houck’s Ridge: The scene presents the 1st Texas and 20th Georgia pressing toward Smith’s guns, with the 4th Maine and 99th Pennsylvania fighting among the boulders.
• Left sleeve — Rose Woods: The illustration shows the 3rd Arkansas exchanging close-range fire with the 86th New York and 20th Indiana through trees and thick underbrush.
• Right sleeve — The North Wall: The panel depicts the 15th Georgia and 1st Texas firing from behind the stone wall as Brooke’s brigade of Caldwell’s Union division advances through the woods. A brigade roster adds another layer of detail.

Approximate times trace the illustrated action from the first uphill advance to the evening fight at the wall. Boulders, trees, and smoke bring the landscape into the narrative, emphasizing the terrain and restricted visibility portrayed in each scene.
