A Rate That Built the Modern Navy
Established in 1957, the DP rate pioneered ADP equipment across the fleet — from COBOL-programmed mainframes to magnetic tape systems. For four decades, Data Processing Technicians managed payroll, personnel records, supply systems, and statistical reporting with precision and discipline. In 1997, the rate merged into the Information Systems Technician (IT) rating — but the foundation they built endures in every network the Navy runs today.
