Feeding the Fleet - Mission Critical
Navy Culinary Specialists are the food service professionals responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, appetizing meals to sailors around the world. They manage galleys (Navy kitchens), plan menus, order food supplies, prepare meals for crews ranging from dozens to thousands, maintain food service equipment, ensure food safety and sanitation, and manage food service budgets. CS personnel understand that good food is essential to morale and mission readiness.
The CS rating was formerly known as Mess Management Specialist (MS) until January 15, 2004, and before 1975 included the Commissaryman (CS) and Steward (SD) ratings. The evolution of the rating reflects the Navy's commitment to professional food service and the recognition that culinary expertise is a critical skill that supports operational effectiveness.
Culinary Excellence at Sea
Culinary Specialists work in challenging environments—preparing meals in galleys that pitch and roll in heavy seas, cooking for thousands aboard aircraft carriers, managing limited food storage on submarines, and adapting menus to accommodate dietary restrictions and cultural preferences. They work long hours, often starting before dawn to prepare breakfast and finishing late after cleaning up from dinner service.
CS personnel must master food preparation techniques, baking, menu planning, nutrition, food safety, inventory management, and galley operations. They prepare everything from basic meals to elaborate holiday feasts, from box lunches for flight crews to formal dinners for visiting dignitaries. On special occasions like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and the Navy Birthday, Culinary Specialists create memorable meals that bring a taste of home to sailors far from their families.
Culinary Specialists also compete in culinary competitions, with the best earning recognition as Navy Chefs of the Year and representing the Navy in prestigious culinary events. Their professionalism and dedication to excellence have elevated Navy food service to new levels of quality and sophistication.
Whether you are a Navy Culinary Specialist, want to honor a CS rating sailor, or appreciate the critical role that good food plays in maintaining morale and readiness, this t-shirt represents dedication, skill, and service to shipmates.
Ideal for: Navy CS rating sailors and veterans, food service professionals, culinary specialists, veterans' families, and everyday wear.
Culinary Specialist. Feeding the fleet. Mission ready. Anchors Aweigh.
