The Rating's History
Before September 6, 1944, the critical tasks of launching, recovering, fueling, and handling naval aircraft were divided among several ratings. As naval aviation expanded during World War II, the need for a dedicated, skilled flight deck crew became undeniable — and the Aviation Boatswain's Mate rating was born.
