Unit History
Introduced in 1963, the M60 AVLB was developed by the U.S. Army Engineer Research & Development Laboratories under contract with General Dynamics. Built on the M60 Patton main battle tank hull, it could deploy a 60-foot scissors-type bridge in under two minutes — enabling rapid river crossings and obstacle breaching under fire. It replaced the earlier M48 AVLB and served as a cornerstone of U.S. combat engineering doctrine for decades.
