The 9th Cavalry Regiment was organized on September 21, 1866, in New Orleans, Louisiana, as part of the U.S. Army's post-Civil War restructuring. It was one of the four regiments composed of African American soldiers, known as Buffalo Soldiers, and was commanded by Colonel Edward Hatch. The regiment was formed to provide security and maintain order on the American frontier during a time of westward expansion and conflict with Native American tribes.
