Unit History

  • The "Keystone" SSI, a red keystone on a blue background, represents the 28th Infantry Division, the oldest division-sized unit in the U.S. Army, with roots tracing back to a 1747 battalion. Officially formed in 1879 and later redesignated for World War I, the division earned the nickname "Bloody Bucket" from German soldiers due to its tenacious combat in WWI and earned a Presidential Unit Citation for its role in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII. The "wo Stars" in your query may refer to the standard keystone SSI, which does not have stars, as opposed to variations used in the past that may have included stars.
