The US Army's Specialist 5 (SP5) rank, an enlisted rank within the pay grade E-5, was established in 1955 and later phased out. It was one of several specialist ranks created to recognize highly trained non-combat specialists. These ranks, including SP5, were eventually replaced by traditional NCO ranks like Sergeant, and the specialist ranks were largely eliminated except for Specialist Four (SP4), which was later renamed "Specialist" (SPC).
