The 370th Infantry Regiment was formed from the 8th Infantry Regiment, Illinois National Guard, which was the first all-black militia regiment in the US. The 8th Infantry Regiment was established in the 1870s and fought in the Spanish American War, where it made history with its all-black officer corps. The 370th Infantry Regiment was mustered into service for World War I on July 25, 1917. The unit's history begins nearly 20 years before entry into the war, when it was initially organized in 1895 as the 9th Battalion Infantry. The unit was redesignated as the 8th Illinois Infantry in 1898, and then redesignated as the 370th Infantry Regiment during World War I.
In World War II, the 370th Infantry Regiment arrived in Naples, Italy on August 1, 1944, and was attached to the 1st Armored Division. The 370th entered combat on August 24, 1944, participating in the crossing of the Arno River, the occupation of Lucca, and the penetration of the Gothic Line.
