The Campaign to Defeat ISIS
When ISIS seized vast territories across Iraq and Syria in 2014, declaring a brutal caliphate and committing atrocities against civilians, American and coalition forces launched a comprehensive campaign to defeat them. Warriors deployed to Iraq and Syria to train partner forces, conduct direct action raids, provide air support, and fight in some of the most intense urban combat since World War II.
The fight to liberate Iraq and Syria from ISIS required courage, skill, and sacrifice. American service members worked alongside Iraqi Security Forces, Kurdish Peshmerga, and Syrian Democratic Forces to systematically dismantle the terrorist organization. American advisors, special operations forces, and air support enabled Iraqi forces to fight block by block, building by building, to free the city from ISIS control. In Syria, the liberation of Raqqa—ISIS's self-declared capital—required similar courage and determination as coalition forces and partner units fought to destroy the terrorist stronghold.
Warriors from all branches of service contributed to the defeat of ISIS—Army Special Forces trained and advised partner forces, Rangers and SEALs conducted precision raids against high-value targets, conventional infantry units fought alongside partner forces in urban battles, and aircrews provided devastating air support that destroyed ISIS positions and protected ground forces.
