The Campaign to Liberate Iraq
When ISIS seized vast territories across Iraq in 2014, including Iraq's second-largest city Mosul, American and coalition forces returned to Iraq to support Iraqi Security Forces in defeating the terrorist organization. Warriors deployed as advisors, trainers, and special operations forces to help Iraqi forces reclaim their country from ISIS control.
The fight to liberate Iraq from ISIS required courage, skill, and sacrifice. American service members worked alongside Iraqi Security Forces, Kurdish Peshmerga, and tribal fighters to systematically dismantle the terrorist organization. They fought in dense urban terrain, cleared buildings room by room, and faced an enemy that used human shields, IEDs, suicide bombers, and brutal tactics.
From Ramadi to Mosul - Defeating ISIS in Iraq
The liberation of Iraqi cities from ISIS control required months of intense urban combat. In Ramadi, Fallujah, and ultimately Mosul, American advisors, special operations forces, and air support enabled Iraqi forces to fight block by block, building by building, to free their cities from ISIS control. The nine-month battle for Mosul was one of the most intense urban battles since World War II, requiring extraordinary courage from Iraqi forces and their American advisors.
Warriors from all branches of service contributed to the defeat of ISIS in Iraq—Army Special Forces trained and advised Iraqi forces, Rangers and SEALs conducted precision raids against high-value targets, conventional forces provided training and support, and aircrews provided devastating air support that destroyed ISIS positions and protected ground forces.
