The 59th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, originally known as the 59th Coast Artillery Regiment, was a significant unit in the United States Army. It was constituted on December 1, 1917, and organized on January 1, 1918, at Fort Hamilton, New York. The regiment served in World War I and participated in the Battle of Corregidor in World War II. It was reorganized as a 155 mm gun regiment in 1921 and later redesignated as the 59th Air Defense Artillery Regiment in 1971. The regiment's distinctive unit insignia, approved on August 15, 1930, features a shield with a vair and thistle, a lion grasping a sword, and the motto "DEFENDIMUS" (Latin for "We Defend"). The regiment's history includes participation in three campaigns during World War I and has been involved in various military operations, including deployments in Germany from the 1960s to the 1980s. However, the regiment has no active battalions today.
