The 27th Infantry Division had a distinguished history in both World War I and World War II, particularly known for its service in the Pacific Theater during the latter. It was originally formed as the New York Division in 1908 and later designated the 27th Division in July 1917. In WWII, the division was the first combat division to leave the continental United States after Pearl Harbor and saw extensive action in the Pacific, including Makin, Eniwetok, Saipan, and Okinawa.
