The 1st Battalion, 61st Infantry Regiment participated in Operation Just Cause, the 1989 U.S. invasion of Panama, before being redesignated as the 4th Battalion of the 6th Infantry Regiment in September 1989. The operation's objective was to capture Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, protect American lives, and secure U.S. interests in the Panama Canal Zone.
