In the US Army, Specialist 5 (SP5) was a specific pay grade (E-5) within the Specialist rank, which existed from 1955 to 1968. It was part of a system of Specialist ranks established in 1955, with Specialist 5 being equivalent to a Sergeant (E-5) in terms of pay and responsibilities. This rank was ultimately replaced with the current "Specialist" (SPC) designation, which corresponds to the E-4 pay grade.
