The Specialist 5 (SPC5) rank in the US Army, designated as E-5, was a specialized enlisted rank that existed before 1985. It was discontinued that year, along with the E-6 Specialist rank. The Specialist ranks were created to recognize enlisted personnel with higher levels of experience and technical expertise. The E-4 Specialist rank (formerly Specialist Three, then Specialist Four) is the only Specialist rank that still exists.
