The 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of the 101st Airborne Division used distinctive helmet markings during World War II, primarily the heart symbol painted on the sides of their helmetsThis was part of a larger system used by the 101st to quickly identify and reassemble paratroopers after jumps, using playing card symbols. The 502nd's heart symbol, like the other symbols, was intended to be readily visible and aid in quick assembly.
