The 44th Scout Dog Platoon was an element of the U.S. Army's 25th Infantry Division, active during the Vietnam War, where K-9 teams served as scout dogs to detect enemies. Staff Sergeant Robert W. Hartsock of this unit was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions in 1969 when he shielded his comrades from a detonating satchel charge.
