The 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), participated in Operation Desert Storm as part of Task Force 3-502nd Infantry. They deployed to Saudi Arabia in August 1990, during Desert Shield, to deter a potential Iraqi invasion and prepare for offensive operations. On February 23, 1991, they conducted a large-scale air assault into Iraq, establishing Forward Operating Base (FOB) Cobra, and later FOB Viper, to facilitate attacks on enemy positions and encircle the Republican Guard.
