The 38th Infantry Regiment, a unit of the famed "Buffalo Soldiers," was organized at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, in 1866. This regiment, composed of African American enlisted men and typically white officers, served on the western frontier, primarily engaged in frontier duty and conflicts with Native American tribes.
