The 23rd Infantry Division, also widely known as the Americal Division, was a U.S. Army unit activated twice, first during World War II and again during the Vietnam War. Formed in New Caledonia in 1942 and reactivated in Vietnam in 1967, it is unique for being the only division formed outside the U.S. twice in response to urgent wartime needs.
