The 523rd Signal Battalion utilized assets of the 509th Signal
Battalion to assist in providing a divisional signal battalion to
the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal). The 523rd Signal Battalion
had the mission of providing signal communications to include
establishment and operation of a division area communications
system of signal centers, wire and radio trunk and local lines,
and radio/wire integration stations providing general and direct
communications support for units in the division area. Its
headquarters was co-located with the division at Chu Lai.
However, its elements were often scattered to provide direct
support to the separated divisional units.
