29th Field Artillery Regiment - Heritage Since 1918

The 29th Field Artillery Regiment is a field artillery regiment of the United States Army, first constituted in 1918 in the National Army (USA).

The 29th Artillery Regiment has served in various roles throughout its history, including field artillery and air defense artillery missions. During World War II and the early Cold War, some batteries of the regiment were designated as searchlight batteries, providing critical air defense support.

Searchlight Batteries - Air Defense Support

Searchlight batteries played a vital role in air defense operations during World War II and the early Cold War era. These units operated powerful searchlights that could illuminate enemy aircraft at night, enabling anti-aircraft artillery batteries to engage aerial threats. Searchlight operations required precise coordination between searchlight crews, radar operators, and anti-aircraft gunners.

Searchlight soldiers operated large, mobile searchlights mounted on trucks or trailers. When enemy aircraft were detected by radar or sound locators, searchlight crews would activate their lights and sweep the sky to locate and illuminate the target. Once illuminated, anti-aircraft guns could engage the aircraft with greater accuracy. Multiple searchlights often worked together to "cone" a target, keeping it illuminated from multiple angles.

Searchlight batteries defended critical installations, ports, cities, and military facilities from enemy air attack. The soldiers who served in these units worked in all weather conditions, often under enemy fire, to provide the illumination that enabled effective air defense. Their work was dangerous and demanding, requiring technical skill, teamwork, and courage.

While searchlight technology was eventually superseded by radar-directed fire control systems, searchlight batteries played a critical role in air defense during their era of service. The soldiers who served in units like Battery G, 29th Artillery (Searchlight) contributed to the defense of American forces and installations during a critical period in military history.

Whether you served with Battery G, 29th Artillery (Searchlight), are a descendant of a searchlight battery soldier, or appreciate the history of air defense artillery, this t-shirt represents dedication, technical skill, and the proud heritage of searchlight batteries.
