De Oppresso Liber - Unconventional Warfare Heritage
Special Forces traces its roots as the Army's premier proponent of unconventional warfare from purpose-formed special operations units like the Alamo Scouts, Philippine guerrillas, First Special Service Force, and the Operational Groups (OGs) of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Although the OSS was not an Army organization, many Army personnel were assigned to the OSS and later used their experiences to influence the forming of Special Forces.
This heritage of unconventional warfare came to full fruition in Vietnam, where Army Special Forces played a critical and unique role throughout the conflict. Green Berets arrived in Vietnam in the early 1960s and remained throughout the war, conducting operations that were unlike any other American units in theater.
Green Berets in Vietnam - Elite Warriors
Army Special Forces soldiers lived and fought alongside Montagnard tribesmen, Vietnamese forces, and other indigenous groups in remote border regions and the Central Highlands. They established camps throughout South Vietnam's most dangerous areas, creating a network of outposts that interdicted enemy infiltration routes and provided intelligence on enemy movements. Green Berets trained and led indigenous forces, conducted long-range reconnaissance patrols, executed direct action missions, and performed the unconventional warfare operations that were critical to the war effort.
Many Special Forces soldiers served with MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group), conducting highly classified cross-border operations into Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam. These missions were among the most dangerous of the war, with small teams conducting reconnaissance, prisoner snatches, and direct action missions deep in enemy territory.
Special Forces Vietnam combat veterans demonstrated extraordinary courage, skill, and dedication. They mastered multiple languages, understood local cultures, and fought in conditions that tested the limits of human endurance. Their legacy of unconventional warfare excellence continues to define Army Special Forces today.
Ideal for: Army Special Forces Vietnam combat veterans, Green Berets, MACV-SOG veterans, special operations supporters, military reunions, veterans' families, and everyday wear.
