On August 18, 1976, American and South Korean soldiers entered the Korean Demilitarized Zone to trim a poplar tree obstructing a UN observation post. What followed became one of the most tense confrontations of the Cold War — the Axe Murder Incident. Three days later, the United States and Republic of Korea launched Operation Paul Bunyan: a massive, deliberate show of force that cut down that tree and sent an unmistakable message.
The 51st Signal Battalion was there — providing the communications backbone that kept command connected across one of the most volatile borders on earth.
