The 126th Infantry Regiment Hoodie carries the lineage of one of Michigan's most decorated military units — the "Second Michigan," a regiment tested in the deserts of Iraq, the mountains of Afghanistan, and every mission in between. This is more than a hoodie. It's a tribute to the soldiers who stood in the line.
The Regiment
The 126th Infantry Regiment is a United States military unit of the Michigan Army National Guard, with subordinate units stationed in Cadillac, Wyoming, Dowagiac, and Detroit. Originally organized as infantry, the regiment has served in armored, cavalry reconnaissance, and infantry roles across its history — returning to its infantry roots in 2016 when it joined the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
Combat Record
Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, elements of the 126th were immediately mobilized under Operation Noble Eagle for airbase security at TACOM and Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Members later deployed to Texas and California in support of the war on terror.
In 2004, a contingent deployed to Afghanistan under Operation Enduring Freedom to train Afghan soldiers. In January 2005, a company-sized element mobilized at Fort Dix, New Jersey, then deployed to Iraq under Operation Iraqi Freedom — stationed in the Green Zone, Baghdad, providing security for Iraq's top-tier government personnel and conducting route security missions in Western Baghdad. They returned to Grand Rapids, Michigan on 26 February 2006.
In October 2006, the 1–126 Armor transitioned to the 1–126 Cavalry. By April 2008, the unit deployed again to Kuwait and Iraq, serving as a Security Force (SECFOR) unit providing convoy security across both countries. They returned to Michigan on 12 December 2008.
In January 2012, the unit deployed once more to Afghanistan. On 20 May 2012, two vehicles from C-Troop 1–126 struck IEDs while conducting combat patrols in the Shah Wali Kot district. Ten members received the Purple Heart. The unit was awarded the Valorous Unit Award as an attached unit to the 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Regiment — permanent order 274–04, dated 2 October 2013.
A permanent memorial to the 126th was dedicated at Camp Grayling, Michigan on 12 August 2005.
