Unit History
Activated at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1943, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion broke the color barrier as America's first all-Black airborne unit — training alongside and outperforming expectations in an era when the U.S. military was still segregated. They earned their jump wings and stood ready for deployment to the European and Pacific theaters of World War II.
Instead, history assigned them a classified and equally critical mission on American soil. When Japan's Fu-Go balloon bomb campaign sent thousands of incendiary devices drifting across the Pacific toward the forests and communities of the American West, the Triple Nickles were activated as military smokejumpers — parachuting into remote, rugged terrain to neutralize the threat before it could reach civilian populations.
Their mission remained classified for decades. But their legacy was never forgotten by those who served and those who carry their story forward. The Triple Nickles stand as a defining chapter in American military history — proof that excellence and courage are colorblind.
