Unit History
The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion — nicknamed The Triple Nickles — was an all-Black airborne unit of the United States Army during World War II. Activated following a December 1942 recommendation by the Advisory Committee on Negro Troop Policies, the unit was championed by Assistant Secretary of War John J. McCloy and approved by Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall. On February 25, 1943, the 555th Parachute Infantry Company was constituted — a milestone in American military history.
