Unit History
Activated at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1943, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion shattered barriers as America's first all-Black airborne unit — achieving the coveted jump wings in an era when the military itself was segregated. They stood ready to deploy into combat in the European and Pacific theaters, but history had a different — and equally demanding — mission in store.
When Japan launched thousands of incendiary Fu-Go fire balloons across the Pacific, targeting America's western forests and civilian population, the Triple Nickles were activated as military smokejumpers. They parachuted into the rugged Pacific Northwest terrain — mountains, dense forests, and remote wilderness — neutralizing fire threats on American soil in a classified wartime operation that wasn't declassified for decades.
Though overlooked by mainstream military history for too long, the Triple Nickles demonstrated that discipline, courage, and excellence know no color. They are a foundational chapter in American airborne and African American military heritage.
