Unit History
Formed at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1943, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion was the U.S. Army's first all-Black airborne unit — a historic first achieved in the face of systemic segregation. They trained relentlessly and stood ready to deploy overseas, but history had a different assignment waiting.
When Japan launched thousands of incendiary fire balloons (Fu-Go) over the Pacific Coast, threatening to ignite forests and civilian panic, the Triple Nickles were called in. Deployed as military smokejumpers, they parachuted into the rugged Pacific Northwest mountains to neutralize the threat on American soil — a classified wartime mission kept secret for decades.
Overlooked by history for too long, the Triple Nickles proved that courage, discipline, and excellence cannot be segregated.
