Unit History
Activated in 1943 at Fort Benning, Georgia, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion became the U.S. Army's first Black airborne unit at a time when the armed forces were still segregated. They trained, qualified, and stood ready to deploy overseas — but in a twist of history, their most critical mission came on American soil.
During World War II, Japan launched thousands of fire balloons (Fu-Go) over the Pacific Coast, intending to ignite America's forests and spread panic. The Triple Nickles were deployed as smokejumpers, parachuting into the mountains of the Pacific Northwest to locate and neutralize these incendiary devices — a classified mission that stayed secret for decades.
They served with distinction under fire, under prejudice, and under the radar. Their courage was total. Their recognition was long overdue.
