Unit History

The 79th Engineer Battalion is a U.S. Army combat engineer unit with deep roots in American military history. During the Cold War, engineer units like the 79th served as the silent backbone of NATO's deterrence strategy — standing ready to bridge rivers, clear minefields, fortify defensive positions, and enable rapid maneuver across contested European and Pacific terrain.

Cold War-era engineers maintained relentless readiness under a constant threat posture. Deployed to West Germany and Korea, they trained for high-intensity conventional warfare while sustaining garrison infrastructure in forward-deployed positions. They were the unseen enablers of everything that moved, fought, and survived.

The Cold War Service designation honors those who held the line for decades without the fanfare of combat awards — veterans whose technical mastery, discipline, and commitment to the mission defined an entire generation of Army engineering.

Their legacy lives in every bridge crossed, every obstacle cleared, and every soldier who made it home because the engineers led the way.

Wear the Legacy.
