The Regiment That Earned Its Name
The nickname “Devils in Baggy Pants” was bestowed by a German officer who wrote in his diary after the Sicily campaign: “American parachutists — devils in baggy pants — are less than 100 meters from my outpost line. I can't sleep at night; they pop up from nowhere and we never know when or how they will strike next.” That reputation has never faded. The 505th PIR remains one of the most decorated and battle-tested regiments in the United States Army.
