Unit History
The 502nd Infantry Regiment — originally the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment (502nd PIR) — was established shortly after U.S. entry into World War II and assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, “The Screaming Eagles,” one of the most decorated formations in U.S. Army history. The regiment saw substantial action in the European Theater, including the D-Day airborne assault, the defense at Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and the final push into Germany. Inactivated in 1945, the regiment reactivated in 1956 and has continued earning its fearsome reputation as the Widowmakers through decades of elite infantry service.
