864th Engineer Battalion Unit History
The 864th Engineer Battalion, known as the “Pacemakers,” is a combat engineer battalion of the United States Army based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, as a subordinate unit of the 555th Engineer Brigade. The battalion traces its origins to the 864th Engineer Aviation Battalion, constituted in December 1942 and activated at Geiger Field, Washington. During World War II it served in the Pacific Theater, earning three campaign streamers for New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and Luzon, along with the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.
In May 1965 the battalion shipped to Cam Ranh Bay, South Vietnam, arriving as the first battalion-size U.S. engineer unit in the country. There it built port, transportation, and support facilities, later taking on base camp construction and line-of-communication construction and maintenance. For its outstanding efforts, the Secretary of the Army awarded the battalion the distinctive designation “Pacemakers” in September 1968. The battalion returned home in August 1971 having earned thirteen campaign streamers, two Meritorious Unit Commendations, and the Republic of Vietnam Civic Action Honor Medal, First Class.
