Tank Destroyer Heritage

Tank destroyer battalions were a type of U.S. Army unit fielded during World War II, organized either as towed battalions equipped with anti-tank guns or as mechanized battalions with armored self-propelled guns. They were formed in response to Germany's use of massed armored formations early in the war, and the tank destroyer concept envisioned these battalions acting as independent units that would respond at high speed to large enemy tank attacks, attached in groups or brigades to corps or field armies. In practice, they were usually attached individually to infantry divisions. Over one hundred battalions were formed, and more than half saw combat service before the force was disbanded shortly after the war.
