Essentials - Building Combat Power
The 20th Engineer Brigade is a combat engineer brigade assigned to the XVIII Airborne Corps of the United States Army stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Although the brigade was identified as an airborne unit, not all of its subordinate units were airborne qualified—despite the airborne tab as part of the unit patch. Soldiers of the 20th Engineer Brigade provide various supportive duties to other Army units, including construction, engineering, and mechanical work on other Army projects.
Though its predecessor units have lineage that dates back before the American Civil War, the formation was not formally designated as the 20th Engineer Brigade until its activation on 16 August 1950, at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The brigade has a distinguished history of supporting combat operations and providing the engineering expertise that enables military success.
Vietnam and Beyond
During the Vietnam War, the 20th Engineer Brigade deployed to Vietnam and provided critical engineering support throughout the conflict. Combat engineers built roads through jungles, constructed airfields and base camps, cleared minefields and obstacles, built bridges, and performed the essential engineering work that enabled combat operations and sustained American forces in theater.
Engineers faced the same dangers as combat troops—enemy fire, booby traps, mines, and ambushes—while performing their missions. They worked in difficult terrain and harsh conditions, often under fire, to complete projects that were essential to mission success. The motto "Essentials" reflects the critical role that engineers play in enabling combat operations.
