The 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment — “The Old Guard” is the oldest active-duty infantry unit in the United States Army, serving the nation since 1784. Its name was bestowed by General Winfield Scott during a victory parade in Mexico City in 1847, following the regiment’s valorous performance in the Mexican War. With 50 campaign streamers spanning from the Battle of Fallen Timbers to World War II and Vietnam, The Old Guard carries more history than almost any unit in the Army.
Today, The Old Guard serves as the Army’s official ceremonial unit and escort to the President — conducting military ceremonies at the White House, the Pentagon, and national memorials, maintaining the 24-hour vigil at the Tomb of the Unknowns, and providing military funeral escorts at Arlington National Cemetery. Old Guard soldiers also provide security for Washington, D.C., in times of national emergency.
