Greek Civil War (1946–1949)

The Greek Civil War was the first major Cold War confrontation — and the conflict that gave birth to the Truman Doctrine, reshaping American foreign policy for generations.

The Conflict

Following the liberation of Greece from Nazi occupation, a brutal civil war erupted between the Greek government and communist insurgents backed by Yugoslavia, Albania, and Bulgaria. Britain, exhausted by World War II, could no longer sustain its support for the Greek government — and turned to the United States.

The Truman Doctrine

In March 1947, President Harry S. Truman addressed Congress with a declaration that would define the Cold War: the United States would support free peoples resisting subjugation by armed minorities or outside pressures. Congress approved $400 million in military and economic aid to Greece and Turkey — and the era of American global leadership had begun.

The American Mission

U.S. military advisors — the Joint U.S. Military Advisory and Planning Group (JUSMAPG) — trained, equipped, and advised Greek National Army forces. Their expertise and American material support proved decisive. By 1949, the communist insurgency was defeated.
