Libya (1986) — Operation El Dorado Canyon

On April 15, 1986, the United States launched a coordinated air strike against Libya in direct retaliation for the April 5 bombing of a Berlin discotheque frequented by American servicemen — an attack linked to Libyan intelligence.

The Strike

Operation El Dorado Canyon was a joint Navy and Air Force operation executed with precision and speed. F-111 Aardvarks flying from bases in the UK — denied overflight rights by France and Spain — made the long round-trip journey around the Iberian Peninsula. Simultaneously, Navy A-6 Intruders launched from carriers in the Mediterranean. Targets included Muammar Gaddafi's compound at Bab al-Azizia, the Benina airfield, and the Sidi Bilal naval base.

The Cost

One F-111 and its two-man crew were lost during the mission — the only American casualties of the operation. Their sacrifice underscored the danger of projecting power deep into hostile airspace.

The Message

El Dorado Canyon sent an unambiguous message: acts of state-sponsored terrorism against Americans would be met with direct military force. It marked a turning point in U.S. counterterrorism policy.
