Operation Iraqi Freedom - The Iraq War
The Iraq War was a protracted armed conflict from 2003 to 2011 that began with the invasion of Iraq by the United States–led coalition which overthrew the Iraqi government of Saddam Hussein. The conflict continued for much of the next decade as an insurgency emerged to oppose the coalition forces and the post-invasion Iraqi government. An estimated 151,000 to 1,033,000 Iraqis died in the first three to five years of conflict. US troops were officially withdrawn in 2011. The United States became re-involved in 2014 at the head of a new coalition; the insurgency and many dimensions of the armed conflict continue. The invasion occurred as part of the George W. Bush administration's War on Terror following the September 11 attacks.
Third Army / ARCENT served as the senior Army headquarters commanding operations throughout Operation Iraqi Freedom, coordinating the deployment, employment, and sustainment of Army forces across Iraq.
Third Army Leadership in Iraq
Third Army Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans served during the invasion, the counterinsurgency campaign, the surge, and the transition to Iraqi control. As the Army component of CENTCOM, Third Army / ARCENT commanded Multi-National Corps - Iraq and oversaw divisions, brigades, and coalition partners as they conducted combat operations throughout Iraq.
Soldiers under Third Army command fought in major battles including Fallujah, Ramadi, Baghdad, Sadr City, and countless other engagements. They conducted combat patrols, cleared insurgent strongholds, trained Iraqi Security Forces, and worked to establish security and stability in Iraq. Third Army coordinated the massive logistical effort required to sustain combat operations and adapted tactics to defeat an enemy that used IEDs, suicide bombers, and complex attacks.
Many soldiers deployed multiple times under Third Army command, spending years away from their families in combat zones. They served with courage, professionalism, and dedication, demonstrating the same aggressive spirit and tactical excellence that defined Patton's Third Army in World War II.
