The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) of the 23rd Infantry Division, also known as the Americal Division, features a blue and white design with four stars representing the Southern Cross. This SSI was approved for the Americal Division in 1943 and then redesignated for the 23rd Infantry Division in 1954. The unit was activated in 1942 and was the first Army Infantry Division formed outside of the United States, on the island of New Caledonia, hence the name "Americal".
