The 7th Special Forces Group was formed in May 1960 when the 77th Special Forces Group was reorganized and renamed as the 7th Special Forces Group. In May 1962, an element of 7th SFGA departed Fort Bragg for Panama to form the 8th Special Forces Group. In the 1960s, responding to the increased demand for Special Forces mobile training teams throughout the world, the 7th SFGA provided the nucleus for the 3rd and 6th Special Forces Groups.
The 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) is headquartered at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, and maintains a geographic focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. Green Berets of the 7th SFG are regional experts who speak Spanish, Portuguese, and other languages, understand the cultures and politics of their area of operations, and build relationships with partner nation forces.
