Earned Through Excellence
On 13 June 1923, Captain Ernest J. King, Commander, Submarine Division Three (later Fleet Admiral and Commander in Chief, U.S. Fleet, during World War II), suggested to the Secretary of the Navy (Bureau of Navigation) that a distinguishing device for qualified submariners be adopted. This led to the creation of the Submarine Warfare Badge, one of the Navy's most respected and challenging qualifications.
Earning the Dolphins requires extensive study, practical qualification, and demonstrated proficiency across all submarine systems and operations. Sailors must complete a comprehensive qualification program that covers every system aboard the submarine—from propulsion and electrical systems to weapons, navigation, damage control, and emergency procedures. They must demonstrate the ability to operate equipment, stand required watches, and respond to casualties. Most importantly, they must prove they can contribute to the submarine's mission and the survival of the crew.
The Silent Service
Submarine qualified sailors are members of the Silent Service, operating the world's most advanced submarines in the most unforgiving environment on earth. They serve aboard nuclear-powered attack submarines, ballistic missile submarines, and guided missile submarines, conducting missions that range from strategic deterrence to intelligence gathering, from anti-submarine warfare to special operations support.
