Earned, Not Given - The Dolphins
The Submarine Warfare Insignia (usually known as "dolphins" or "fish") are worn by qualified submariners. Earning the dolphins requires extensive study, practical qualification, and demonstrated proficiency in every aspect of submarine operations. Submariners must complete comprehensive qualification requirements covering all ship systems, damage control, emergency procedures, watchstanding, and tactical operations.
The qualification process is rigorous and demanding. Sailors must demonstrate knowledge of propulsion systems, weapons systems, navigation, communications, life support, hydraulics, electrical systems, and every other system aboard the submarine. They must prove they can operate equipment, stand watches, respond to casualties, and contribute to the boat's mission and survival. Only after completing all requirements and passing a final qualification board do they earn the right to wear the dolphins.
