The Story Behind the Rate
Established in February 1944, the Ship's Serviceman rating was born from necessity — the Navy needed specialists who could run the essential retail and personal services that kept sailors sharp and spirits high during long deployments. Four specialty ratings merged into one in 1948 under the abbreviation SH, and for over 75 years, SH sailors operated ship's stores, barbershops, laundries, and tailoring services across the fleet.
On October 1, 2019, the rate was redesignated as Retail Specialist (RS) — but the legacy of the Ship's Serviceman endures. This hoodie is a tribute to every SH who ever rang up a sale, cut a regulation haircut, pressed a uniform, or made sure a sailor had what they needed to face the day.
