The Most Versatile Rating in the Navy

Interior Communications Electricians operate and perform organizational and intermediate maintenance on alarm systems, warning systems, indicator systems, interior communications systems, ship's control systems, entertainment systems, and navigation systems. IC is one of the most versatile ratings in the U.S. Navy, with equipment located all the way forward, all the way aft, all the way up the mast, and on the bottom of the ship.

IC personnel maintain the 1MC (ship's general announcing system), sound-powered phone circuits, alarm systems that warn of fire and flooding, gyrocompass systems that provide heading information, rudder angle indicators, engine order telegraphs, ship's entertainment systems, and countless other communications and control systems. They are the specialists who ensure that the captain can communicate with the crew, that alarms function when needed, and that ship control systems provide accurate information.

Everywhere on the Ship

Members of this rating are commonly referred to as "IC-men" by Navy personnel, and their work takes them to every space on the ship. They install and maintain communications circuits in berthing areas, repair alarm systems in engineering spaces, troubleshoot gyrocompass repeaters on the bridge, maintain entertainment systems in crew lounges, and service navigation equipment throughout the ship. Their versatility and broad technical knowledge make them essential to ship operations.

IC personnel must master electrical theory, electronics, sound-powered phone systems, alarm circuits, gyrocompass systems, announcing systems, and the installation and maintenance of diverse communications and control equipment. They read complex wiring diagrams, troubleshoot electrical and electronic circuits, install new equipment, and ensure that all interior communications and control systems function reliably.

Interior Communications Electricians work on every type of Navy ship, from aircraft carriers and submarines to destroyers and support vessels. They are the specialists who keep ships connected internally, ensure that alarms warn of dangers, and maintain the control systems that enable safe navigation and ship handling. Their work is critical to ship safety and operational effectiveness.

Whether you are an Interior Communications Electrician, want to honor an IC-man, or appreciate the versatile technical expertise required to maintain ship communications and control systems, this t-shirt represents skill, dedication, and the all-around capability that defines the IC rating.

Ideal for: Navy IC rating sailors and veterans, communications electricians, ship systems technicians, veterans' families, and everyday wear.

Interior Communications Electrician. IC-men. Most versatile rating. Anchors Aweigh.
